Getting to Know EMDR Therapy

EMDR therapy, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a structured and highly effective way to deal with emotional trauma. It's all about helping you process traumatic memories and reduce the emotional pain they're causing. Francine Shapiro came up with this method back in the late 1980s, and it's since become a trusted choice in the world of mental health.

Here's the core idea: EMDR therapy believes that traumatic experiences can get "stuck" in your brain, leading to things like flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, and feeling emotionally numb. EMDR therapy's goal is to free these painful memories so that your brain can process them in a healthier way.

What You Need to Know About EMDR Therapy:

Bilateral Stimulation: EMDR therapy stands out because of its unique approach with bilateral stimulation. That might involve guided eye movements, gentle hand taps, or auditory cues. These back-and-forth movements activate both sides of your brain, making it easier for your mind to deal with traumatic memories.

Phases of Treatment: EMDR therapy follows a clear eight-phase process. These phases include getting to know your history, preparing for therapy, assessing your needs, working through distress, installing positive beliefs, checking in with your body, closing sessions, and revisiting progress. Your therapist will guide you through each step, tailoring the treatment to fit you.

Targeting Traumatic Memories: EMDR therapy is all about tackling those distressing memories head-on. It helps you process and reframe them. This process takes the emotional weight off your shoulders and opens up the path for healing and personal growth.

What EMDR Therapy Can Do for You:

Effective Trauma Resolution: EMDR therapy is known for its power in treating trauma-related issues like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex trauma, and phobias. It gives you the tools to face and process your traumatic experiences in a safe and controlled space.

Quick Progress: Unlike some traditional talk therapies, EMDR therapy often gets results quickly. Many people start feeling better after just a few sessions.

Better Coping Skills: EMDR therapy equips you with improved coping strategies, better emotional regulation, and a newfound sense of control over your healing journey.

Maintaining distance

In EMDR therapy, it is not necessary to describe in detail to the therapist every step of what happened in the traumatic event being worked with. Nor is it necessary to relive the event over and over again as an essential part of the therapeutic process.

This is an important difference from some other forms of trauma-focused treatments.

For individual memories that you may find particularly difficult to talk about, it is possible not to tell the therapist anything about that memory at all, and still do an EMDR session on it. This would not perhaps be the best way to work with all the aspects of an entire traumatic event, but it is a possibility for individual memories. This can help to maintain a greater sense of privacy and distance from the trauma.

How long does it take?

It’s really difficult to say how many sessions an individual might need. EMDR is usually a short-term therapy which could be something like six, twelve or sixteen sessions, for example, for single event traumas. Where there is complex trauma it could take considerably longer. Sessions are usually at a frequency of once or twice a week to allow time for processing between sessions. Individual sessions will be 60-90 minutes long, which can be discussed at the assessment stage. EMDR can, however, be embedded in a longer term, open-ended therapy, to be used in addition to other appropriate techniques.
